An American Icon Turns 71

July 27 marks the seventy-first anniversary of the release of A Wild Hare, the first Bugs Bunny cartoon. Directed by Tex Avery, written by Rich Hogan and with animation by Virgil Ross, it set the basic style of the characters of Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, including their signature lines- “What’s Up Doc” and “Shhhh, Be vewwy, vewwy quiet,  I’m hunting wabbits”.
